Clothes Story Makes West Coast Premiere at Mesa College Gallery

A Visual Journey Through the Clothing and Lives of African American Women, 1889–1963

San Diego, CA — The Mesa College Gallery is proud to host the West Coast premiere of Clothes Story: Highlighting African American Women’s Stories and Clothing from 1889–1963, opening August 25 and

on view through October 16, 2025. A public reception will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, 4-7 pm. Admission is free, and the gallery FA 103 is open to the public Monday through Thursday during campus hours.

Clothes Story is a traveling exhibition that weaves together the cultural, personal, and political stories of African American women through the garments they wore. Spanning nearly eight decades, the exhibition presents historically rooted fashion—from everyday attire to special-occasion garments—as powerful expressions of identity, resilience, and creativity.

Curated by cultural event designer Kenneth Green of Atlanta, Georgia, this immersive exhibition invites visitors to reflect on how clothing tells a deeper narrative about place, purpose, and perseverance in Black women’s lives across generations.

The San Diego presentation is made possible by the Hervey Family Fund at The San Diego Foundation, whose support helps bring culturally significant projects to the region. The exhibition is presented in partnership with the San Diego African American Museum Association and Mesa College.

For more information, please contact the Mesa College Gallery at (619) 388-2829 or Kenneth Green at (407) 616-5288 for interview opportunities.
